Gender Affirming Surgery
Gender affirming/reassignment surgery is performed to transition individuals with gender dysphoria to their assigned gender. People with gender dysphoria often feel like they were born in the wrong gender. Most healthcare providers require patients to participate in counseling before undergoing surgery. Sex reassignment surgery is a surgical procedure by which a transgender person’s physical appearance and funtion of their exisiting sexaul characteristics are altered to resemble the gender they identify with. Meeting with a mental health professional can help one cope as well as offer support throughout the process.
