Exposure therapy is a psychological treatment that was developed to help people face their fears through the use of various systematic techniques. As part of exposure therapy, a person is gradually exposed to the situation that causes them distress, eventually leading to a decrease or eradication of the specific fear or phobia. The goal of exposure therapy is to create a safe environment in which a person can reduce anxiety, decrease avoidance and improve their overall quality of life.
